I had the opportunity to interview home cook, influencer, and cat mom Alexa Santos aka @alexawhatsfordinner on my “What Is Your Bagel Order?” series. Watch the full episode below to see her unhinged “candy bagel order” plus see all episodes HERE, but below with Alexa we talk about her insane drunk eating, how to speak like a news lady, and what’s the dumbest viral recipe she’s seen get millions of views.
Viral “Dumb” Recipes: Chickles And Ice Cream Roll-Ups
Jeremy: What’s the dumbest recipe you’ve had that’s gone viral?
Alexa: The“chickle” is what it’s called. It’s like a cheese pickle.
Jeremy: What is that?
Alexa: So you melt cheese in a pan and then put a pickle in it when it’s melted and then roll it up and it’s just like a cheese-coated pickle and it’s crunchy, but it’s literally just cheese and pickle and it’s called a chickle, and they always go viral.
Alexa: It is honestly objectively delicious, but it’s literally cheese and pickle. That’s it.
Jeremy: How many views did it get?
Alexa: Millions. It’s one of those go-to always. Also a bad one that’s really good is a fruit roll-up that you roll out, like a flat fruit roll-up, and then put a scoop of vanilla ice cream in it and roll it up and then the fruit’s like ASMR on the outside. So that’s literally just a blob of ice cream wrapped in fruit roll-up.
Jeremy: That sounds impossible to eat.
Alexa: It’s delicious. I mean, you know me, I love that shit. But yeah, millions of views for that. Mensa scholar level.
Your Drunk Eating is Insane…
Jeremy: You’ll have to defend your bagel order in a minute. But before we do that, you have to defend your drunk food order. Can you explain the insane ritual you have of your drunk eating?
Alexa: Okay, so we have this amazing restaurant in New York City called Lil Frankie’s, which is an amazing restaurant no matter what time of day you go. Amazing Italian food. It does get better, but it’s really, really good, solid, high bar.
Jeremy: Old school Italian.
Alexa: Old school Italian, high bar, high quality, nothing you get there is bad. And they made the genius decision to stay open till 4:00 a.m. on the weekends, 2:00 a.m. on the weekdays. I live in Williamsburg, it’s right over the bridge, so it’s on my way home no matter where I am in Manhattan.
Alexa: So on the way home, stop by Lil Frankie’s, drop $150 on like three pastas, a pizza, and a kale salad and a glass of wine. They have Frank’s special chilled red on special most of the time. So yeah, no matter what time of night, unless it’s after 4:00 a.m., they have the full menu. Nothing is missing. It’s not just a late-night menu, you can get the entire menu.
Jeremy: But you get like 5 lbs of buttered spaghetti noodles?
Alexa: Okay, yeah: spaghetti limon, gnocchi pomodoro if it’s on special. If it’s not on special, get the penne pomodoro, but the pomodoro is great. And then you get a pizza and a kale Caesar salad and the Frank’s chilled red. You’re so set and it’s literally $150.
Jeremy: What an order.
Alexa: They only take cash. Sometimes I’ve had to ask people around, like I didn’t have my debit card, they have an ATM there, I’ve had to ask just passersby, “Can I borrow, can you take out money from the ATM for me and I’ll Venmo you?”
Jeremy: They absolutely think you’re scamming them.
Alexa: They do think I’m scamming them, but a couple nice people say yes. A couple young millennials just like, “Hey, listen, I don’t have my debit card. I’ll Venmo you, I’ll even Venmo you an extra $20, $30. Just get me cash and I’ll pay you right now.” You got to do what you got to do.
Jeremy: Fair
Life As A “News Lady” And The Voice
Jeremy: You used to be a news lady. Can you explain to us the news lady voice? What is it exactly? Did they teach it to you in school? I don’t get it.
Alexa: Okay, not in school, but as you can tell my voice is kind of naturally shrill and high-pitched, so my natural register is pretty high. News ladies speak from their diaphragm. It’s a much lower register. So at my big internship where they really teach you how to do this, they were like, “Okay, get on air, you’re doing it.” The news director sat me down and we were recording into a microphone trying to change the way my voice sounds.
Alexa: So for years, I was on the news every single day, standing there talking about stuff. And you’d believe it. I can do it for you right now, want me to do it?
Jeremy: Sure, yeah.
Alexa: So yeah, that sounds completely different from my regular voice. But I can do it all the time. It’s my fun party trick. At Lil Frankie’s I can do it.
Jeremy: So it’s in your diaphragm.
Alexa: It is. Yeah, you just kind of bring your voice lower and then you talk with that intonation of like, “Right here, witnesses tell me that they’re still waiting on information from police.” You get really used to it. You do it every day for literally five, six years.
Jeremy: And people just think it’s more authoritative?
Alexa: Yeah, I think so, because you don’t want to sound like me on the news. I’m like, “Hey guys, so we’re right here in the park, we’re having so much fun.” That’s why I left news ultimately, because it was not fun. It was way too serious, not for me.
