Top 3 Jewish Foods? With Jacqueline Spiegel @jaxxsnax

I had the opportunity to interview pastry chef and influencer Jacqueline Spiegel, aka @jaxxsnax on my “What Is Your Bagel Order?” series. Watch the full episode below to see us talk about her…unusual bagel order, and see all episodes HERE, but with Jaq, we discussed our fav Jewish foods, Jewish Mothers, and the definition of “upstate” in New York.

Top Three Jewish Foods

Jackie: Food number one is probably babka, even though it’s like Polish or what is it like Eastern European, right?

Probably challah (number 2).

But my third, I don’t know, my mom is probably going to think I’m crazy for saying it, probably matzo ball soup.

Jeremy: I mean, you’re missing the number one. Latkes!

Jackie: Well, what are your top three?

Jeremy: Ooh. Latkes number one. I like the idea of matzo ball soup. I could go like a chopped liver though, and then maybe like a pastrami sandwich? I’ll take that.

Basically just the entire Katz’s menu would be great.

French Culinary School vs. Jewish Mothers

Jeremy: Who critiques food harder? Your teachers when you went to culinary school or Jewish mothers?

Jackie: That’s a really good question. Because I went to French culinary school, so they were really hardcore. But I did this video with my sister in the grocery store of us yelling, critiquing everything in the grocery store. So definitely Jewish mothers, I think they are just never happy with anything.

Jeremy: Yeah, I don’t think people get that who aren’t Jewish at least.

Jackie: You’re right. Maybe Italians get it because their mothers are also very like, “You didn’t like the sauce?”

Is Westchester Upstate?

Jeremy: (you’re from Long Island) What would you consider upstate?

Jackie: Like... Rochester, New York?

Jeremy: If I say upstate, that’s the first thing you think of?

Jackie: Or like Buffalo.

Jeremy: That’s a very good answer. I appreciate that answer. Because there’s like a weird thing in New York of like anywhere north of you is just upstate. So I grew up in Westchester. Everyone I know from Long Island, they’re like, “Oh, you grew up upstate.” I’m like, what the fuck are you talking about?

Jackie: No, no, no, no. Westchester is right here. It’s literally like 35 minutes away.

Jeremy: That’s what I said. You are on the right side of history.
